Experience & Activities
Nneka Obasi currently serves as Senior Community Liaison with the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights (IMRR).
Of Nigerian descent, Nneka spent her formative years in the UK, where she completed her primary and part of her secondary education. Upon completing her secondary education in Nigeria, she pursued tertiary education in Nigeria, France, and Germany. Nneka earned her bachelor’s degree in French and German with honors from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She holds a master’s degree in education from St. Xavier University in Chicago, as well as a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from the Spertus Institute in Chicago and is a Ph.D. candidate at DePaul University, Chicago.
Nneka’s diverse academic and professional background reflects her deep commitment to both education and the nonprofit sector in which she has extensive experience having served in various roles including Director of Advancement, Administrator, consultant, community organizer, board member, and volunteer.
In addition to her work in the nonprofit industry, a certified teacher, Nneka, taught for several years and has both teaching and professional experiences that span the globe. Nneka’s roles in education include serving as Refugee Facilitator with the Refugee Welcoming Intake Office (RWIO), of Chicago Public Schools and as an elected official, serving on the board of Illinois Community Consolidated School District 180 in Burr Ridge, Illinois. Nneka also served with the Elders Advisory Council of the Black World Studies Department, Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois.
In her current role and privately, Nneka continues to be deeply involved with the African and African Diaspora Communities in Chicago and the surrounding areas, as an advocate for new immigrants and as a promoter of African and African Diaspora art, music, fashion, and cultures in general. Additionally, she continues to lend her expertise to help new non-profit organizations get off the ground and adopt best practices.
